Sodium chloride is an ionic compound with chemical formula of NaCl, colorless cubic crystal or fine crystal powder, which is salty. Its appearance is white crystal, and its source is mainly sea water, which is the main component of salt. Soluble in water, glycerin, slightly soluble in ethanol (alcohol), liquid ammonia; insoluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Impure sodium chloride has deliquescence in air. Its stability is good and its aqueous solution is neutral.
In industry, the method of electrolyzing saturated sodium chloride solution is generally used to produce hydrogen, chlorine, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and other chemical products (generally known as chlor alkali industry) which can also be used for ore smelting (the production of active metal sodium from electrolytically melted sodium chloride crystal).
It is used to prepare normal saline in medical treatment and seasoning in daily life.
